*赤色巨星とは何？
星は生まれてから何十億年も輝き続けますが、やがて寿命を迎えると大きく姿を変えます。その一つが赤色巨星という段階です。これは、星が中心部の水素を使い果たし、エネルギーのバランスが崩れたことで外層が膨張し、赤く巨大に膨らんだ姿を指します。
代表的な赤色巨星にはベテルギウスがあります。オリオン座にあるこの星は、太陽の約1,000倍もの大きさを持ち、夜空で赤く輝いて見えることで知られています。現在すでに寿命の終わりが近づいており、将来的には超新星爆発を起こすと考えられています。
赤色巨星の最期には外層が宇宙空間に放出され、中心には白色矮星が残ります。このように星の最期は、宇宙に新たな元素を供給し、次の世代の星や惑星の材料となる大切なプロセスなのです。
*What Is a Red Giant?
Stars shine for billions of years, but eventually, they reach the end of their lives and undergo major changes. One such phase is the red giant stage. This occurs when a star exhausts the hydrogen in its core, causing an imbalance that makes the outer layers expand and the star grow large and red.
A well-known example of a red giant is Betelgeuse, located in the constellation Orion. It is about 1,000 times larger than the Sun and is easily visible as a bright red star in the night sky. Betelgeuse is nearing the end of its life and is expected to explode as a supernova in the future.
When a red giant dies, it sheds its outer layers into space, and a white dwarf remains at the core. This process spreads new elements throughout the universe, helping to form the next generation of stars, planets, and even life.
