~ MBA天文家Ray(星のソムリエ)の1分間天文教室

*What Is a Supernova?
A supernova is a massive explosion that marks the end of a star’s life. This dramatic event occurs when a star several times more massive than the Sun runs out of fuel. Without fusion to counteract gravity, the core collapses suddenly, and the outer layers are blasted into space in an incredibly bright explosion. This is known as a supernova.
One famous historical example is the supernova observed in 1054, recorded in China and Japan. It was so bright that it was visible even during the daytime for several weeks. The remnants of that explosion are now known as the Crab Nebula (M1).
Supernovae produce heavy elements like iron, which are essential for forming new stars, planets, and even life. In fact, the atoms in our bodies were forged in ancient stellar explosions. In this way, supernovae are not just spectacular cosmic events—they are also the source of the very matter that makes up our world.
