おとめ座の神話は、ギリシャ神話に登場する女神アストレアにまつわるお話です。アストレアは、正義や清らかさを象徴する女神で、人間と神々が仲良く暮らしていた「黄金の時代」に、地上で人々に正しい道を教えていました。しかし時代が進むにつれて、人間の心は乱れ、争いや嘘が増えていきます。「鉄の時代」になると、神々は次々に天に帰ってしまい、アストレアも最後には天へ昇ることになりました。神々は、正義の象徴である彼女を星座として夜空に残しました。それが「おとめ座」です。
*What is the Myth of Virgo?
The myth of the constellation Virgo is centered around the Greek goddess Astraea. Astraea was the goddess of justice and purity, and during the "Golden Age," when gods and humans lived together in harmony, she walked among people, guiding them toward righteousness. However, as time passed, humanity’s hearts grew corrupt, and conflicts and falsehoods began to spread. By the time the "Iron Age" arrived, most of the gods had returned to the heavens, unable to bear the decline of mankind. Astraea, too, eventually ascended to the sky, saddened by the loss of virtue in the world. To honor her and her role as a symbol of justice, the gods placed her among the stars. That is the constellation we now know as Virgo.
